RIA vs. Traditional Wirehouse

RIA — &Partners, Rockefeller Capital, etc.

  • Registered directly with the SEC as investment advisors
  • Held to a fiduciary standard — your best interest, at all times
  • Not tied to proprietary products — use whatever fits each client
  • Advisor owns the client relationship — continuity and personalization
  • Built on giving financial advice

Wirehouse — Schwab, Merrill, Morgan Stanley, UBS, etc.

  • Registered as broker-dealers
  • Held to a suitability standard — just "suitable," not necessarily best
  • Advisors are employees, use the firm's proprietary products
  • Firm owns the client relationship
  • Built around selling financial products

Our recommendation

You keep this account where it is — at Fidelity through Honeywell's plan. We coordinate the investment selection, contribution strategy, and Roth-vs-traditional allocation alongside your new advisory accounts so the whole portfolio works together.

Coordination strategy

Contribution Optimization

Maximize employer match first. Evaluate Roth vs traditional contributions based on your current and projected tax bracket.

Investment Selection

Build the right allocation within the plan's available fund menu, coordinated with your other accounts to avoid overlap.

Tax-Location Strategy

Hold high-growth assets here for tax-deferred compounding. Bonds and income-producing assets stay in tax-advantaged space.

Future Rollover

When you separate from Honeywell, we'll evaluate rollover options — to your advisory IRA or other strategies.

Recommended Balance $150,000
Custodian Fidelity
Account Type Structured IRA
Strategy Defined Outcome / Hedged

Why this account exists

As you approach retirement, sequence-of-returns risk becomes one of the biggest threats to your long-term plan. The Structured IRA uses defined-outcome strategies that establish a known buffer against market losses over a set period — so a sharp downturn early in retirement doesn't permanently impair your portfolio.

How it works

Downside Buffer

A defined level of protection against losses (typically 10–30%) over the strategy period. You won't lose the first portion of a market decline.

Performance Lock

We can lock in gains at various points throughout the investment, securing them. The buffer then resets on this new, higher starting value — locking in upside while keeping the downside protection.

Strategy Periods

Strategy periods are 6 years total. Depending on market conditions, we can structure the buffer to cover different time windows within those 6 years.

Coordinated Allocation

Sized to provide meaningful protection without sacrificing long-term growth potential across the rest of your portfolio.

Why this sizing

$150,000 represents the portion of your portfolio that we want to actively shelter from sequence risk — large enough to make a real difference in a bad-market retirement year, sized so the buffer strategy meaningfully complements the active growth in your other accounts.

How the buffer works in different markets

A 20% buffer protects your account across three different market scenarios. Hypothetical example.

Strategies in your plan

Tax-Loss Harvesting

Systematic identification and execution of opportunities to offset gains throughout the year — coordinated across all your accounts to avoid wash sales.

Asset Location

The right investments in the right account type. Tax-inefficient assets in tax-deferred space; tax-efficient assets in taxable accounts.

Roth Conversions

Multi-year conversion ladder targeting low-bracket years to shift assets to tax-free status before RMDs begin.

Charitable Giving

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) and Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs) to maximize the tax efficiency of your giving.

RMD Management

Strategic withdrawal planning to manage Required Minimum Distributions and avoid bracket creep in your 70s and beyond.

CPA Coordination

Proactive coordination with your CPA — quarterly check-ins to align our recommendations with your filing strategy.

This year's tax actions

  • Maximize Honeywell 401(k) contribution

Capture full employer match. Evaluate Roth vs traditional split based on current bracket and projections.

  • Backdoor Roth IRA contribution

If income exceeds direct Roth limits, evaluate backdoor strategy with attention to pro-rata rule.

  • HSA optimization

If eligible, max HSA contributions and treat as a long-term tax-advantaged investment account, not a current-year spending account.

  • Tax-loss harvesting review

Continuous monitoring across your advisory accounts. Year-end execution coordinated with your CPA.

Coordinate with your CPA

The fees include advisory services, performance measurement, transaction costs, most custody services, and trading. The fees do not cover the fees and expenses of any underlying packaged products in the portfolio. The fee schedule, which is negotiable, is based on account size and an assumed active portfolio. There may be a minimum client fee requirement per calendar quarter to maintain this type of account. Advisory programs are not designed for excessively traded or inactive accounts and are not appropriate for all investors. There are minimum account sizes for these types of accounts.

Please note that this is an example of an advisory fee schedule. Actual advisory fees will vary, may be higher or lower than the fees represented in the above schedule, and will be at the discretion of the advisor. Factors impacting advisory fees include but will not be limited to the total assets under management and other combined services (e.g., fee-for-planning engagements). All fees will be agreed to, in writing, in advance, within the Investment Advisory Services Agreement. Certain custodial fees such as paper document fees and IRA maintenance fees may be borne by the client and in addition to above referenced fees. View full regulatory disclosures →
